A. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
Main characteristics: What is contributing the problem?
Areas: Challenging communication, relationship, self esteem,fear, mental disorder, anxiety, stress, disorganization
Main focus:
• Resolve the way of thinking – feeling – behaving; re-frame thinking process
• Psycho-therapeutic approach to deal with dysfunctional emotions, cognition (thinking) and behaviors
• Focus on the present moment – how we feel about the problem now
Relationship between the client and therapist may look more like coach and client relationship
My favorite features:
• Research proved it significantly decreases use of medication in any of the mental challenges including insomnia and severe depression
• 22 % of parents of children with ASD use CBT
B. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Mindfulness = calm awareness
Main characteristics: Accept thoughts and feelings without judgment
Areas: Anxiety, depression, frustration, anger, self-esteem, stress, emotional instability, relationships, aging
Main focus:
• Alternate tendency to get drown into automatic reactions (pattern or automatic way of thinking – feeling – behaving)
• Learn how to pay attention or concentrate with purpose, in each moment and without judgment
• Recognize that holding onto some feeling is ineffective and mentally destructive
• Increase quality of life, ability to recognize reasons of actions of the others, purpose, acceptance and solution
• Expend focus, attention, imagination, flexibility
